These spectacular tree-like bamboos command attention. The can grow to over 100′ high with culm diameters exceeding 12″ in their native tropical habitat. Around the world they are used in construction, as a sustainable building material with a tensile strength of steel. Many varieties have shoots that are used in Asian cooking and medicines.
The species Dendrocalamus, Gigantochloa, Guadua and some Bambusa varieties are included in this category. These bamboos tolerate minimum temperatures in the 25-30 degree range.
